New Matter at LHC?!

As you know, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle accelerator used by physicists to study the smallest known particles. Two beams of subatomic particles, protons or lead ions, travel in opposite directions inside the accelerator, gaining energy with every lap. The goal is to recreate the conditions just after the Big Bang.

The newest Data from lead-proton collisions has yield surprising results. It seems the collisions might be producing a new type of matter called gluons or color-glass condensate. A paper describing this surprising findings is now available on arXiv.

Flower Power

It seems some plants have the natural tendency to absorb unwanted chemicals and toxins from the soil. For example, the flower Alyssum, draws the chemicals arsenic and platinum from the land. A team of scientists led by the University of Warwick in United Kingdom are planning to use this fact to turn the fields of native flowers into high tech nanoparticle factories.

Other than cleansing the land, an ultimate goal of the project is to create nanoparticles for many applications including cancer treatments.

If successful, the group is hoping to have industrial applications of the process working within 3 years.
